T.J. Lang Signs His Rookie Contract

The PackersFanJournal.com-proclaimed right (or possibly left) tackle of the future has signed his rookie deal. According to PackersNews.com

… Lang signed a four-year contract that included a $502,500 signing bonus and base salaries of $310,000 in 2009, $395,000 in 2010, $480,000 in 2011 and $565,000 in 2012. The deal also contains a fourth-year escalator clause that can raise his compensation in 2012 to $1.308 million depending on his playing time.

Packers’ Looking Good For 2009

Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News believes the Packers are on solid ground this year, and for good reason. Though their record indicates otherwise, the Packers were competitive against nearly all of their opponents. Plus, they’ll be returning 21 of 22 starters in 2010.

Despite [having the youngest team in the NFL], the Packers defeated 12-4 Indianapolis and NFC North champion Minnesota, fell in overtime to 13-3 Tennessee and blew fourth-quarter leads in losing four other games. Green Bay had the talent to compete in 2008 but lacked the maturity to close out opponents.

Wells Back in the Middle?

A week or so ago, most reports from OTAs were that the starting center position had all but been wrapped up by Jason Spitz. To me it sounds like so much smoke being blown up the collective rears of the media. But Joe Philbin isn’t counting out Wells at center. The PackersNews.com Insider’s quoted Philbin on the matter:

There are 12 SEC schools, and probably 10 of them didn’t think Scott Wells could play,” said Philbin. “He went to Tennessee and started a boatload of games. A lot of people didn’t think he could play in the NFL, he started a lot of games.

My guess is Scott is going to come back here and compete like hell. We’ll see. I don’t think in anyone’s mind is there a foregone conclusion that Jason Spitz is going to start.
