Thursday News Round Up

Early Odds on Pack’s Super Bowl Chances

I’m not a betting man, so I have no idea what any of this means, but BetUs.com has the Packers at “+2,600″ to win it all this year (go to the second page). Interestingly, they have the Packers ranked in the top ten with teams like Pittsburgh, New England, New York (Giants) and Indy.

The Packers get a break in the schedule as well from last year. Not only that, but they should be tougher on defense and Aaron Rodgers won’t be under a microscope this season like in 2008-2009. All of those factors add up to a winning season and a possible NFC North title.

Al Harris Has Nothing But Love For Brent Faver

The Fresno Bee (The Fresno Bee?!?) has coverage of Al Harris’s interview in which he expressed his love and respect for Brett Favre. Harris is a stand-up guy and really did have some nice things to say. Read it here.

Everybody here loves Brett. Brett has to make decisions for him and his family – what’s best for him and his family – so however that works out, I wish him the best of luck and I support him. But I’m here in Green Bay. Aaron (Rodgers) is our quarterback. We’re just pushing forward.

Packers sign Rookie Meredith

From Packers.com:

The Green Bay Packers have signed tackle Jamon Meredith. The signing was announced Thursday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Meredith, the second of the Packers’ two fifth-round picks, was a three-year starter at both tackle and guard at South Carolina. He appeared in 49 career games, including 38 starts, for the Gamecocks.

Meredith is the fourth of the Packers’ eight draft picks to sign with the team.

Rodgers Gaining Responsibilities in McCarthy’s Offense

We all know that Brett Favre called a lot of audibles under McCarthy. Last year, despite taking over for Favre, Rodgers was not given as long a leash to change McCarthy’s plays at the line of scrimmage. That’s changing this year as McCarthy believes Rodgers is progressing nicely and will have more responsibilities. Greg Bedard at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal has more on Rodger’s development and new responsibilities.

Perhaps having more input at the line will allow Rodgers to play less managed. At times last season, Rodgers played like a system quarterback, doing exactly what he had been told the previous three seasons. It was as if Rodgers had programmed himself to be the anti-Favre: limit mistakes, let the others do the heavy lifting.

That’s all for today. I’m sure there’s more out there, but what you see is what you get… enjoy!
