News Round Up: Monday, 6.29.08
Not a ton of news today. For that reason, I’m breaking my unofficial “No Brett Favre News” policy. Happy reading.
Love Him or Hate Him, Ted Thompson Isn’t Wasting the Pack’s Money
There’s an interesting blurb from Kevin Seifert at ESPN.com’s NFC North Blog. Seifert reports that the NFL broke down how much money organizations spent in order to field their teams. They then averaged the cost per win. The Packers came out tenth overall, well ahead of the VIkings, who as Packers fans know, seem to throw money around willy-nilly.
“Minnesota spent more cash on player salaries and bonuses than all but four NFL teams during the five-season period from 2004-08. But Chicago and Green Bay were significantly more efficient in their spending based on victories per dollar spent.“
Riveting (Riveting!) Interview With Aaron Rodgers
The Daily Californian, The University of California’s student newspaper published a recent interview with Aaron Rodgers. It covers everything from weird fan requests, to mustaches to how boring Big 10 football is. It’s worth a read if you want to get into Rodgers’ head a little bit. Also, if you’re a betting man, watch to see if Rodgers is sporting a straight mustache before you put any money on the Packers.
“KD: You’ve had a moustache, you’ve rocked the long hair, is there anything we should be expecting of you this season in the hair or facial hair departments?
AR: I do have some plans. For the last three years especially I’ve done some sort of moustache for the preseason. I have a straight ’stache. We’re 0-2 and my quarterback rating is under 70 with just the straight ’stache.“
No Holdout for Raji
Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal has quoted Packers rookie B.J. Raji as saying he will report for training camp on time and has no intention of staging a holdout if his contract is not complete. Reading the quote makes me wonder though: What question prompted the response, which agency is he referring to, and who is holding out that is represented by the same agency? Collins, maybe? Here’s the quote:
“There will be no problem, as far as holding out on my end,” Raji said. “I’m a rookie but from what I’ve been told, holdouts are not necessarily a good thing. Especially a rookie coming in, you can’t afford to miss a week or two of training camp, especially when you’re trying to find a way to get on the field. Yeah, that’s my agency, but I’m in control, not the other way around.“
And here’s the article. There’s a lot of other news in this post by Nickel as well, so be sure to check it out.
If Brett Favre (sigh) Has Any Say, Adrian Peterson is the Next Barry Sanders
This really isn’t news about the Packers, per se, but I thought it was an interesting article from the Oklahoman’s NewsOK.com. Personally, I believe Favre is a huge improvement over either of the Vike’s other options. The problem is that he’s not a long term solution. And if the Vikes don’t find a real, long term solution soon, AP will end up like Barry Sanders: tons of yards, no championships. Not that I’d be complaining.
“If the Vikes don’t show some smarts, Peterson will wake up one day, be 30 years old and will have traveled the Barry Sanders Parkway. All those yards, all those memories, and not a February to show for it.“
You know, looking back, if I were Ted Thompson, I would have traded Brett Favre for Adrian Peterson. Or at least I would have tried.

That’s it for today. Sorry for bringing up good ol’ Brent Faver. I do wish him the best. I’m just trying not to fuel to fire… too much.
