News Round Up: Tuesday, 6.30.09
There’s a decent amount of new Packers news out there today. Here is some of the most interesting. Read on!
Controversy at Outside Linebacker
Yes, there is controversy at the outside linebacker spot, but this time it doesn’t have much to do with Aaron Kampman or Clay Matthews III. It seems that there is at least a somewhat decent chance that come final cuts, Brady Popinga will be the odd man out. I have a hard time believing that he won’t be able to find his way onto the field though. But I can also hear Jack Black saying “You shouldn’t have played so average!” Why Jack Black? I don’t know. The Green Bay Press Gazzette has the story.
“Since the switch to the 3-4, Poppinga has worked mostly as Kampman’s backup on the left side and hasn’t taken any snaps at either of the two inside positions, where Nick Barnett and A.J Hawk are the likely starters and Chillar and Desmond Bishop are the top backups.“
Packers Alum Javon Walker is Running Out of Time
You don’t say… Alas, it’s true, even the Oakland Raiders are starting to realize what a bust Javon Walker turned out to be. You think he’ll make their team this year?
“Since racking up 89 catches for nearly 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns with the Green Bay Packers in 2004, Walker’s production has been inauspicious both on and off the field. He suffered a season-ending injury early in the 2005 campaign and has surpassed 1,000 yards receiving on just one other occasion. In the past two seasons combined, Walker has participated in only 16 games while compiling a mere 41 grabs for 483 yards.“
Will the Pack Make the Playoffs in 2009?
MVN.com’s Frozen Tundra blog has five keys for Packers success this season. They also relayed that ESPN’s Chris Carter and James Hasty rated the Packers as the team that has the best chance on 2009 of making the playoffs after missing out on them last year. Really? Even better than the Patriots? Maybe they mean the Pack have the best chance of teams that had losing records in 2008? I don’t know, but I think the Packers will make the playoffs this year.
“1. Can the Packers’ young offensive line hold together?
2. How quickly can the Packers defense adjust to the new 3-4 system?
3. Will Pat and Kevin Williams have their suspensions reduced by a favourable Minnesota court?
4. Will Brett Favre be healthy and if he is, how quickly will he acquire chemistry with his new teammates?
5. How much of a difference will Jay Cutler make for the Chicago Bears?“
Interesting that they put three of the Packers’ keys to success on the Vikings and Bears. There are only two things keys to Packers success that they have control over? Read the rest here.
And Finally, Some Brent Faver Jokes
I know what you’re thinking: This is the second day in a row I’m violating our unofficial “No Brett Favre News” policy. But I stumbled across this little gem by Bob Burrows from the Hudson Star Observer. The Favre situation, more than anything, is sad for Packers fans and I say laughter is the best medicine. Favre fans lacking a sense of humor beware, there are some zingers in here (zingers, I say!). Here’s a taste:
“Brett Favre has reportedly been sending X-rays to the Minnesota Vikings. It seems like an unnecessary gesture since everyone can already see right through him.“
See? Zingers. You can read the rest here. Or not. Whatever…
